Defining a company is sometimes incredibly easy. In the case of an establishment, like Starbucks, you strive to create great coffee, enticing pastries and fabulous customer service. When it comes to a consulting firm, however, it can be much more difficult.

When I am asked what I do - what my company does - I say that I am a management consultant and my company provides services to business that need assistance in project management utilizing our logistical and coordination skills. Now, that’s not our only service, but the one that I am most commonly hired for these days.

But what does that mean in layman’s terms? I take pieces and put them together.

In an established company, I look at the overall structure of a company and assist its management staff I pulling the company, department or group of departments apart and reassembling the pieces to run more effectively. In the case of a new company or project, I assist in the initial assembly of these parts – understanding that sometimes, pieces need to be rearranged before you can be happy with the result.

When you get into analogies, like forests and trees, let’s say this: I have an innate ability to look at companies from outside the box that they have placed their management structure into. I walk into the forest of a company and look at their forest, the trees, and the leaves on the trees – and then step outside this forest and into the field beyond.

A consultant isn’t tied to the emotions of a company, and a company’s culture is like the climate and annual rainfall of a forest. I can embrace the culture a company has cultivated, yet because I don’t live in the forest full time, I am able to recognize how shifts can be beneficial. I’m able to get a non biased look at how each leaf and tree make up the forest, and how sometimes small changes in the amount of water…or the pruning of a few branches…can make a change in how well the forest flourishes. We want your forest to flourish. I am able to assist in just creating the plans of change…or digging in and assisting and following through on making that plan a success.
